The Bassmaster Classic 2022 has begun!
The Superbowl of professional fishing is here as the Bassmaster Classic began early on March 4th, 2022. Hank Cherry, a 2-time defending champion of the Bassmaster Classic is a crowd favorite is looking to put another jewel in his crown. As of 10:22am EST, March 4th, however, Jared Miller, the Oklahoma native, is making that difficult for Cherry.
Miller, already having reached the catch limit with a weight of 14lb-15oz, is 15 spots ahead of Cherry, who is placed at 20th currently. Hank Cherry has over 5lbs to make up to be in contention for Jared Miller and 1st place. There is a lot of tournament left to play, so it’s still anyone’s game.
After appearing in 45 total tournaments Jared Miller has no classic wins under his belt, and only 1 Top 10 Finishes in his whole career. A win for Jared would prove to be a turning point in his career and a nice birthday present. If you’re lucky enough to shake his hand, make sure to wish him a happy birthday as it is coming up on March 11th.
Our own Dillion Massia is there and had the following to say:
“Sunny and 65. All of the manufacturers are out doing demo rides while the anglers are fishing. The expo center is open where you can purchase or see pretty much anything to do with fishing or the marine industry. Anglers have been catching fish deep and shallow, with the warming weather temps outside the fish should be making a push towards the bank and transitioning from winter patterns to prespawn-spawn. Anglers will be able to catch fish doing just about whatever they want deep or shallow. I expect the angler that ends up on top by the end of the weekend will be the guy who fishes clean, makes good decisions, and fishes his strengths. I think fishing your strengths and confidence type baits and patterns will be what ends up winning because there are some fish[ermen] doing a little bit of everything.”
Below are some snippets from a few blog posts from Bassmaster:
“[Hank] Cherry is fishing wind-blown points, hopping from one to the next, ignoring the coves and pockets between.” Andy Crawford – Bassmaster Blog
“Patrick Walters was the first angler to arrive at the ramp this morning....by a long shot…Walters wisely idled away to work on his gear and get his thoughts in order, leaving the dock empty. Ten minutes later, no one else has arrived. If I hadn't seen him myself[,] I would have no idea he was here.” Pete Robbins – Bassmaster Blog
Mike Suchan in his Bassmaster blog post, has a list from 0-1 million, a deep dive into the numbers of this championship. Take a look here.
We plan to keep you updated on as the tournament progresses.
